While I was studying at Central Saint Martins I was very interested in how to work with graphic elements and I was a regular visitor to the university’s print workshop. I was especially fascinated by mark-making and gesture within abstract painting, I think because the act of putting your mark or leaving a trace on a piece of paper or a canvas is the essential basis for all of my work and that of many other artists. Like a normal signature, it is filled with individuality and meaning; however, in this case it doesn’t signify a name but an abstract expression.

Marks make it possible to distinguish a drawing made by one artist from that of another at a glance. I used my own writing for experiments with various prints and paintings. The present series is a continuance of that work.
